Most people would think twice before jumping into a river known for dangerous currents and polluted water. But when John Byrne saw his beloved rabbit Barney thrown into Dublin’s River Liffey, he didn’t hesitate for a second. At the time, John was living on a bridge in Dublin and sharing his life on the streets with two loyal companions: a Jack Russell Terrier and Barney the rabbit.
Everything changed one summer evening in 2025 when an 18-year-old man cruelly grabbed Barney and tossed him into the river. Faced with the terrifying sight of his pet struggling in the fast-moving water, John immediately jumped in after him. Ignoring the risks to his own life, he fought through the current and managed to reach Barney before it was too late.
After pulling the rabbit from the water, John discovered Barney was unconscious. Determined not to lose him, he performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the rabbit regained consciousness. Exhausted and freezing after the rescue, John then found himself stranded below the bridge and had to be rescued by firefighters. During the ordeal, he reportedly became distressed because he didn’t want to be separated from his dog, who was still waiting for him above.
When asked why he risked everything, John’s answer was simple: “Because he is my child. I love him and I just wanted to save him. I didn’t think, I just jumped.” The young man responsible was later convicted of animal cruelty, while John received a Compassionate Citizen Award for his bravery. His story remains a powerful reminder that true love, loyalty, and courage often come from the most unexpected places.
