“Mom, there’s something you need to know about her.”
I looked up at Colleen. “What does that mean?” She hesitated and told me to read the letter at home. That night, I unfolded the pages. Bryce wrote that Colleen’s daughter, Sadie, was Trevor’s biological daughter. My hands went cold. Behind the letter were bank statements showing Trevor had secretly sent Colleen money for nearly eighteen years. I remembered him saying we needed to save money while our savings quietly disappeared.
The next morning, I searched Trevor’s old files and found Sadie’s name in his will, along with a small trust created months before his death. When I questioned Trevor’s mother, she mentioned his former business partner, Martin. Old records revealed Trevor had lied about when Martin died. Then I discovered Martin’s wife was Colleen. I drove to her home, showed her the records, and demanded the truth. Colleen finally explained that Sadie wasn’t Trevor’s daughter—Martin was her father. Trevor had once ruined Martin’s reputation by secretly altering business records after a failed investment. Martin later died in a car accident, and Trevor spent years sending money to Colleen because he knew his lies had destroyed his friend’s life.
Then Colleen told me what Bryce had discovered before he died. Sadie had a serious heart condition and desperately needed a transplant. Bryce knew his own time was running out, and he hoped his heart could save her. Sadie looked at me through tears. “He wanted you to know what Trevor had done, but he also wanted you to see what he chose to do differently.” She gently placed my hand over her chest. I felt a steady heartbeat beneath my fingers. It wasn’t Bryce coming back to me, but for the first time since losing him, the silence inside me didn’t feel completely empty. Bryce had left me one final lesson: even when life takes everything from you, you can still choose to leave something good behind.
