Australian actress Magda Szubanski has opened up about her difficult cancer journey, sharing an emotional update about living with mantle cell lymphoma. The Kath & Kim star was diagnosed with the rare and aggressive blood cancer in May 2025 and has since documented parts of her treatment, including time spent in hospital. Earlier this year, she announced that she was in remission.

During an interview with 60 Minutes, however, Szubanski spoke candidly about the uncertainty surrounding her condition. She explained that doctors expect the cancer could return and that the question is when and how severe the relapse might be. She said the current median survival is around eight and a half years, while emphasizing that individual outcomes can be shorter or longer. Despite the difficult reality, she maintained her sense of humor and said she hopes to beat the odds. ❤️

Looking back, Szubanski recalled experiencing an intense sensation that felt as though her bones were splitting, which doctors eventually connected to inflammation in her bone marrow. Her fears became so powerful that they even appeared in her dreams, with an inner voice repeatedly telling her that something was seriously wrong. Even during treatment, she continued working, including filming an advertisement she described as an extremely difficult but ultimately manageable experience.

Szubanski also revealed that cancer has affected several members of her family. Her father was diagnosed when she was six, her mother later battled pancreatic cancer, and her sister has lymphoma. Her brother experienced a heart attack and underwent a quintuple bypass, prompting Szubanski to joke darkly that he was the family’s “odd one out.” Through everything, she continues to face her journey with honesty, humor, and remarkable openness.
