Dolly Parton died 17 months after Carl Dean, the man she loved for nearly 60 years

Dolly Parton’s death has made her final words about Carl Dean especially heartbreaking. Parton died on August 25, 2026, at 80, just 17 months after Dean died at 82. The couple married in 1966 and remained together for nearly six decades, despite Dean deliberately staying away from the spotlight while Dolly became one of the world’s biggest stars.

Just four days before her death, Parton spoke to PEOPLE about her recent health struggles. She said she had been dealing with health issues she “just didn’t pay attention to” while caring for Carl. She also said she was still healing but continued working and had many projects she hoped to complete.

After Dean’s death, Parton poured her grief into music, including “If You Hadn’t Been There,” a deeply personal tribute to the man she had loved for almost 60 years. She also spoke openly about how difficult it was learning to live without her longtime partner, describing him as an anchor in her life.

Dolly and Carl never had children, and Dean remained intensely private throughout their marriage. When Parton died, her nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news and described her as finally being reunited with Carl. Their story is a reminder that some of the deepest love stories happen far away from cameras—and that after nearly six decades together, losing one person can leave the other carrying an enormous piece of their shared life.
