Dry January: Benefits of 1 Month’s Alcohol Abstinence Last Through the Year

After the holidays, many people feel tired, gain some weight and spend more money than usual. That is one reason Dry January has become popular. The challenge encourages people to avoid alcohol for 31 days, and research from the University of Sussex found that the benefits may continue well beyond January. The study suggested that taking a month-long break can help people rethink their drinking habits and become more aware of how often they consume alcohol.

Researchers surveyed thousands of people who took part in Dry January and followed some participants for several months. Those who completed the challenge reported drinking less frequently later in the year. Their average drinking days fell from about 4.3 to 3.3 days per week, while the amount consumed on drinking days and the frequency of getting drunk also declined.

Participants reported several additional benefits. Among those who successfully completed the month, 88% said they saved money, 71% reported better sleep, 70% noticed improvements in their general health, 67% felt they had more energy, and 58% reported losing weight. These findings were based on participants’ self-reported experiences, so they should not be interpreted as proof that every person will experience the same results.

However, stopping alcohol suddenly is not safe for everyone. People who drink heavily or regularly can experience potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms, including shaking, sweating, nausea, insomnia, confusion or hallucinations. Anyone who may be dependent on alcohol should speak with a healthcare professional before stopping abruptly. For others, a planned alcohol-free month can be an opportunity to reflect on drinking habits and potentially carry some healthier changes into the rest of the year. 🌿
