Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has spoken openly about the life-threatening medical emergencies that nearly took her life. The actress suffered two brain aneurysms in 2011 and 2013, requiring multiple operations. She later revealed that parts of her skull had been replaced with titanium and that some areas of her brain were permanently damaged. Despite everything, she considers herself incredibly fortunate to have recovered.
Clarke’s first aneurysm occurred after she developed a severe headache while working out and eventually collapsed. Doctors diagnosed a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a dangerous type of stroke caused by bleeding around the brain. She underwent emergency surgery and briefly experienced aphasia, a condition that can affect language. However, her ordeal was far from over. Two years later, another aneurysm had grown, and a second operation failed, forcing doctors to perform another emergency procedure through her skull. 😔
Despite the painful recovery and fears that her cognitive abilities might be affected, Clarke gradually returned to normal life. During a 2022 BBC interview, she described seeing scans of her brain and realizing how much damage she had survived. She expressed amazement that she could still speak, work, and live without the major lasting difficulties she had feared.
❤️ Rather than allowing her experience to define her, Clarke turned it into a mission to help others. In 2019, she co-founded SameYou with her mother, Jennifer, to support people recovering from brain injuries and improve access to rehabilitation. In 2024, they were both appointed MBEs for their services to people with brain injuries. Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience, recovery, and the importance of supporting survivors long after a medical emergency.
