Expert Claims Parents Should Ask Babies For Consent Before Changing Their Diapers

A discussion about diaper changes has sparked widespread debate after sexuality educator and author Deanne Carson suggested that parents should ask their babies for consent before changing their diapers. During a television interview, Carson encouraged parents to say things like, “I’m going to change your diaper now, is that okay?” Although infants cannot respond verbally, she argued that the practice helps establish a lifelong understanding of bodily autonomy and respectful communication.

The comments quickly went viral, generating strong reactions online and in the media. Critics mocked the idea as unrealistic and unnecessary, arguing that babies require immediate care and hygiene rather than symbolic requests for consent. Some even claimed the suggestion could create confusion for parents by adding pressure to a routine caregiving task.

Supporters, however, defended Carson’s message, explaining that her approach is not about waiting for a baby’s permission before providing essential care. Instead, they say it encourages parents to communicate respectfully with children from an early age, helping them understand that their bodies deserve respect and that caregivers should explain what they are doing whenever possible. Several child protection advocates have argued that these conversations can contribute to healthy discussions about personal boundaries as children grow older.

The debate has highlighted broader questions about parenting, communication, and children’s rights. While some see Carson’s advice as an important step toward promoting body autonomy, others believe it overcomplicates everyday parenting responsibilities. Regardless of where people stand, the discussion has encouraged many families to think more carefully about how they communicate with young children and introduce concepts of respect and personal boundaries.
