A quiet neighborhood in Cocoa, Florida, was shaken by a tragic attack on May 17, 2026, when 50-year-old Jodi Cowan was mauled by two dogs while walking her own small pet near her home. According to authorities, the animals, named Max and Mako, escaped from a neighbor’s yard and attacked her. Jodi’s partner of 30 years, Donnell Smith, heard her screams, rushed outside, and desperately tried to fight off the dogs before calling 911. During the eight-minute call, dispatchers reportedly heard Jodi say, “I’m dying. Can’t breathe.” Despite being airlifted to a trauma center, she died approximately four hours later from catastrophic injuries.
The dogs’ owner, 29-year-old Linda Cutler, was arrested eight days later and charged with manslaughter. Investigators reportedly discovered previous complaints about the animals, including an incident just five weeks earlier when a neighbor named John Argila was bitten while trying to protect himself with his bicycle. Smith also told authorities that he had previously warned Cutler about the dogs’ behavior. According to the investigation, additional fencing had been installed, but the animals were still able to escape.
A veterinarian who examined Max and Mako reportedly found no evidence of abuse or neglect but noted signs associated with “littermate syndrome,” a term sometimes used to describe behavioral difficulties in puppies raised together. Investigators also said Cutler had noticed increasing aggression in the dogs during the months before the attack. Both animals were later scheduled to be euthanized, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about dangerous dog attacks and owners’ responsibility to keep their animals securely contained. Cutler’s criminal case remains pending, and the allegations have yet to be resolved in court. Jodi’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of how serious the consequences can be when animals escape and pose a danger to people in their community. ❤️
