Here’s why Nolan Wells’ ‘best friend’ and his family is suing Ben Crump

According to an interview with the New York Post, Warren Hudson, who has described himself as one of Nolan Wells’ closest friends, along with his parents, Ben and Ashlee Hudson, say they plan to file a defamation and slander lawsuit against civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The family alleges that Crump’s public comments falsely linked Warren and his friends to Nolan Wells’ death, damaging their reputations and promoting what they believe is an inaccurate narrative. They also accuse Crump of using the case for financial gain.

The planned lawsuit comes amid intense public attention surrounding the ongoing investigation. The Hudson family maintains that they have been unfairly targeted by speculation and public accusations. They argue that statements made publicly before investigators have reached final conclusions have had a significant impact on their family’s lives and reputation.

Under U.S. defamation law, simply filing a lawsuit does not establish that defamation occurred. To prevail, plaintiffs generally must show that the challenged statements were false, communicated to others, and caused reputational harm. Depending on the circumstances and the individuals involved, additional legal standards—such as proving fault or actual malice—may also apply.

Whether the Hudson family ultimately succeeds will depend on the specific statements at issue, the evidence presented, and how the court applies the law. At this stage, the lawsuit reflects allegations by the Hudson family, not judicial findings, and the underlying investigation into Nolan Wells’ death remains ongoing.
