“He’s still here, but I miss who my dad was”: Rumer Willis spoke about the difficult grief of watching how dementia has changed Bruce Willis

Rumer Willis has opened up about the complicated grief of watching her father, Bruce Willis, live with frontotemporal dementia. In a recent interview, she acknowledged that their relationship is no longer what it once was, but she remains grateful for every moment she can still share with him. “It’s not the same as it will never be the same as it was with having a dad,” she said.

Rumer has admitted that she misses parts of the father she knew before his illness—the conversations, personality and familiar connection they once shared. Yet she is also learning to appreciate Bruce as he is today. She described an unexpected “sweetness” and tenderness in him, something she feels may not have been visible when he was the larger-than-life action star everyone knew.

One of the greatest sources of comfort has been seeing Bruce with Rumer’s young daughter, Louetta. Rumer said she is deeply grateful that her daughter got the chance to meet her grandfather, especially because she does not know whether her younger sisters will have the same opportunity. Bruce has reportedly continued to light up when he sees Lou.

There is no easy way to describe grieving someone who is still here. Rumer’s experience is a reminder that love can survive even when illness changes communication, personality and family dynamics. Instead of focusing only on what has been lost, she is choosing to treasure what remains—the visits, the tenderness, the memories, and the moments when her dad is still able to connect with the people he loves. 💔
