How Long Does Mayo Last in the Fridge?

That half-used jar of mayonnaise sitting in your refrigerator might look perfectly fine, but how long is it actually safe to eat? 👀 Commercial mayonnaise is generally best used within about 2 months after opening when it has been kept properly refrigerated. An unopened jar can usually be kept until the date on the package, as long as it has been stored correctly. ❤️

But dates aren’t the only thing to consider! 🧐 Always check your mayo before using it. If you notice mold, a strange color, a strong sour or rancid smell, or a major change in texture, it’s safest to throw the entire jar away. Don’t taste questionable mayo just to see if it’s still good! 🚫🥫

And what about mayo that has been left sitting out? 🌡️ USDA guidance generally recommends refrigerating perishable foods within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when temperatures are above 90°F (32°C). This is especially important for potato salad, coleslaw, chicken salad, and other mayo-based dishes at picnics or parties. ☀️🥗

One more tip: keep opened mayo cold, tightly sealed, and use clean utensils every time. 🥄❄️ Homemade mayonnaise is different and usually has a much shorter refrigerated shelf life, especially when made with raw eggs. When in doubt, don’t take the risk—a new jar is much cheaper than getting sick! ❤️ Would you keep an older jar if it still looked and smelled normal? 👇
