Seeing a tiny moth fly out of your kitchen cupboard can be frustrating, especially because one pantry moth may mean there are larvae hiding nearby. Adult moths are usually not the ones damaging your food—the larvae feed on dry goods such as flour, rice, cereal, pasta, nuts, seeds, spices, pet food, and dried fruit. That’s why simply killing the moths you see rarely solves the problem.

Start by emptying the affected cupboard and inspecting every dry-food package. Look for webbing, larvae, cocoons, clumped food, unusual residue, or damaged packaging. Discard anything clearly infested, seal it in a trash bag, and take it outside. Then vacuum shelves, corners, cracks, screw holes, and other hidden areas where larvae may have moved before wiping the surfaces with warm, soapy water.

After cleaning, inspect nearby cupboards and don’t forget pet food, birdseed, baking supplies, and older packages. If moths continue appearing, keep searching for another food source rather than assuming the problem is finished.

For long-term prevention, transfer susceptible dry foods into airtight containers instead of relying only on cardboard boxes or thin bags. Rotate older products, clean spills quickly, and check newly purchased dry goods before storing them. Avoid using mothballs near food, and don’t rely on essential oils to eliminate an established infestation. The key is simple: find the source, remove contaminated food, clean thoroughly, seal your pantry foods, and continue monitoring until the entire life cycle is broken.
