How to Make Rosemary Powder at Home

Rosemary powder is a simple, aromatic seasoning that can easily be made at home using fresh rosemary sprigs. This flavorful herb has long been a staple in Mediterranean cooking, where it is often used to enhance roasted vegetables, meats, breads, and sauces. Turning fresh rosemary into powder not only extends its shelf life but also makes it easier to add a burst of herbal flavor to everyday meals.

To make rosemary powder, start with several fresh rosemary sprigs and rinse them thoroughly to remove any dirt or residue. Pat them completely dry, then strip the needle-like leaves from the woody stems. Spread the leaves between sheets of baking paper and dry them until they become crisp and brittle. Proper drying is important because any remaining moisture can affect both flavor and storage life.

Once the rosemary leaves are fully dried, transfer them to a blender, spice grinder, or food processor. Pulse in short bursts until the leaves turn into a fine powder. For an even smoother texture, you can sift the powder through a fine mesh strainer. The result is a fragrant seasoning that captures rosemary’s signature pine-like aroma and concentrated flavor.

Store the finished powder in a clean, airtight container away from heat, sunlight, and moisture. When properly stored, it can remain fresh for several months. Rosemary powder is perfect for seasoning roasted potatoes, grilled meats, soups, stews, marinades, and homemade bread. With just one ingredient and a few minutes of preparation, you can create a versatile kitchen staple that adds rich herbal flavor to countless recipes year-round.
