How to Prevent Sheets from Balling Up in the Dryer

If your sheets always come out of the dryer twisted into a giant ball, the problem is usually overloading and poor airflow. When the drum is packed too tightly, the fabric cannot tumble freely and naturally wraps around itself. Give sheets plenty of room to move, especially if you’re drying large bedding.

Before putting them in the dryer, shake each sheet open and separate the fitted sheet from the rest of the bedding. Avoid mixing lightweight sheets with heavy towels, which can weigh them down and prevent proper movement. If your fitted sheet is especially troublesome, try drying it separately. Wool dryer balls may also help keep the fabric separated, although they work best when the dryer isn’t overloaded. 🧺

For stubborn tangles, pause the dryer halfway through the cycle and shake the sheets loose before continuing. If you’re drying a duvet cover, close its zipper or buttons first so other pieces don’t get trapped inside. Use the appropriate heat and cycle for your fabric, and don’t leave the sheets tumbling longer than necessary once they’re dry.

A simple routine can make a big difference: don’t overload the drum, separate tangled sheets before drying, keep heavy towels out, and remove the bedding promptly when the cycle finishes. If sheets remain damp inside a tight bundle, pull them apart rather than simply increasing the heat. With a little extra space and preparation, you can have cleaner, drier and less-wrinkled sheets without fighting a tangled ball of fabric every laundry day. ✨
