I found this in a flooded ditch and managed to catch it, bringing it home in a jar. I honestly have no idea what it is—does anyone know?

After a powerful rainstorm, I went outside to check the drainage ditch beside my property. What had normally been a simple ditch was now filled with muddy water, leaves, and floating debris. As I watched the shallow pool, I noticed something small moving beneath the surface. Curious, I collected a little of the water in a glass jar and brought it inside for a closer look.

Under the bright kitchen light, the tiny creature looked surprisingly unusual. It had a rounded body and numerous small legs that moved rapidly through the water. Its strange appearance immediately raised questions about what it could be and whether it was something rare or potentially dangerous. However, the creature was actually a fascinating example of an ancient type of crustacean.

The animal was identified as a Triops, commonly known as a tadpole shrimp. These unusual creatures belong to the crustacean order Notostraca and are often described as “living fossils” because their basic appearance has remained remarkably similar for hundreds of millions of years. They have a shield-like shell, a segmented tail, and three eyes, including a small naupliar eye.

Perhaps most fascinating is their ability to survive harsh conditions. Triops eggs can remain dormant through periods of extreme dryness for years, then hatch rapidly when water returns. This allows them to thrive in temporary pools and puddles that may disappear soon afterward. What looked like an ordinary puddle after the storm was actually home to a creature with an extraordinary survival strategy.
