I got pregnant by a married man, and my baby was born with Do:wn syndrome.

“Afraid of what?” I asked. Brielle opened the folder with trembling hands. “My first son, Gabriel, was born eight years ago with Do:wn syndrome.” She showed me his photograph. After severe breathing problems, Gabriel was transferred to specialized care while Brielle underwent emergency surgery. Everett later told her that Gabriel had died after cardiac arrest. But years later, there was no death certificate. An investigator discovered the truth: Gabriel had been placed with a specialized medical foster family under forged guardianship documents. He was alive.

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed. An unknown number said, “You two need to stop talking.” Then: “Rowan, think carefully about what’s best for Luca.” Brielle called her attorney, Cassandra Lin, and I gave them every message Everett had sent me. The investigation uncovered payments from the Shaw family company that had secretly funded Gabriel’s care for nearly eight years. Emails revealed that Lenora had arranged everything because she feared a child with Do:wn syndrome would damage the family’s image. Everett knew the truth and watched Brielle mourn her living son.

Gabriel remained protected while Brielle worked toward reunification. I went with her when she first saw him. He had been told his mother was too sick to raise him. He called her Brielle for months, but she never stopped showing up. One day, as she was leaving, he quietly said, “Mom, wait.” She broke down in tears. Meanwhile, DNA confirmed Everett was Luca’s father, and I fought for child support and sole custody.

Nearly a year later, Brielle invited Luca and me to Gabriel’s birthday. The boys slowly grew close. Gabriel eventually asked, “Did Everett not want Luca because Luca has Do:wn syndrome?” I told him, “That was Everett’s failure. Not yours. Not Luca’s.” Brielle looked at me and smiled. Everett had expected us to hate each other. Instead, the two women he lied to compared their stories, stood together, and finally brought the truth into the light.
