‘I’m 77 and can do headstands – this is my 5-move routine for lifelong strength’

At 77 years old, Dr. Kaye Cleave is challenging stereotypes about aging. She can perform headstands, do the splits, lift weights, and maintain an active lifestyle that many people decades younger would admire. Her message is simple: growing older doesn’t mean giving up strength, mobility, or independence—it means continuing to care for your body in ways that support a healthy, active life.

Dr. Cleave believes exercise is one of the most powerful tools for healthy aging. Research has consistently linked regular physical activity to lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and even cognitive decline. Rather than trying to “stay young,” she encourages people to embrace aging while building the strength and confidence needed to enjoy every stage of life.

Her favorite full-body routine includes five functional exercises using dumbbells: reverse flies to improve posture and strengthen the upper back, single-arm rows to build pulling strength, hammer curls to strengthen the arms and make carrying groceries easier, overhead presses to help with reaching and lifting, and squats to strengthen the legs and support everyday movements like standing up from a chair.

Dr. Cleave performs these exercises to stay strong, mobile, and independent. She says the goal isn’t to make 70 feel like 50, but to show that later years can still be filled with energy, movement, and possibility. Her inspiring journey proves that it’s never too late to start building strength and investing in your health.
