It turns out that we have been wasting electricity for a long time without knowing it

If you want to reduce your refrigerator’s electricity consumption, small temperature changes can make a difference. A good target is around 4°C (39°F) for the refrigerator compartment and -18°C (0°F) for the freezer. Setting the appliance unnecessarily colder can make the compressor work harder and increase energy use.

If your refrigerator uses a numbered dial instead of displaying the actual temperature, avoid automatically turning it to the maximum setting. In many models, a middle setting provides a good balance between cooling and energy consumption. Keep in mind that the exact meaning of the numbers varies between manufacturers, so your appliance’s manual is the best guide.

You can also take advantage of built-in features such as Eco Mode or Energy Saving Mode when available. If you’re going away for an extended period, Vacation Mode can reduce cooling in the refrigerator compartment while keeping the freezer operating. Likewise, turn off Fast Freeze or Fast Cool once the food has reached the desired temperature.

Finally, don’t make your refrigerator work harder than necessary. Keep the doors closed as much as possible, allow hot food to cool before placing it inside, and make sure the door seals properly. The goal isn’t to make your refrigerator as cold as possible—it’s to keep food safely cold without wasting energy.
