A workplace conflict can sometimes follow someone’s reputation long after the job itself is over. As Jaleel White promotes his autobiography, his reported behind-the-scenes tension with Family Matters co-star Jo Marie Payton has resurfaced, bringing an old Hollywood dispute back into the spotlight.
When The Breakfast Club asked White about his former TV mom, however, he chose not to revisit the conflict. White pointed out that he was a minor when they worked together and suggested that, decades later, his life is going too well to be “fighting with a 70-year-old woman” over something that happened 30 years ago.

From a workplace-psychology perspective, White’s response can be viewed as strategic disengagement. Not every conflict needs to be resolved publicly, and sometimes reopening an old disagreement creates more stress than benefit. Choosing not to continue a decades-old feud can be a way of protecting your peace, reputation, and professional future.
After so much time has passed, both people have built lives and careers beyond Family Matters. Perhaps some disagreements are better left in the past rather than repeatedly revisited in public. Do you agree with Jaleel White’s approach? Should he and Jo Marie Payton simply let the past stay in the past and move on?
