A dream cruise turned into a medical nightmare for Louisiana woman Kirsten Lindsey after a rope swing accident during a stop in Honduras left her with a devastating injury. On just the third day of her first Carnival cruise, what began as a fun excursion quickly became a life-changing emergency when a retrieval rope tightened between her legs as she swung over the water, causing what doctors described as a catastrophic genital injury.

At first, the wound appeared to be only a small scratch, but within hours the swelling grew to the size of a baseball, leaving Kirsten in severe pain. She spent more than 12 hours receiving treatment in the ship’s medical center, with the initial care costing around $4,000. Faced with limited treatment options, she and her boyfriend, Blake, decided to arrange an emergency medical evacuation rather than continue the cruise or seek care elsewhere.

The emergency transport came at an enormous cost. The couple paid roughly $20,000 for an air evacuation from Costa Maya and another $30,000 to return to the United States, believing it was the fastest way to get Kirsten the specialist care she urgently needed. After several delays, she was admitted to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where she underwent the first of at least two surgeries.

Carnival Cruise Line said the accident occurred during an independently organized excursion, not one sponsored by the company. The cruise line stated that its onboard medical team treated Kirsten promptly and helped arrange additional medical assistance, adding that it remains concerned for her recovery and that the safety and well-being of its guests remain a top priority.
