Malcolm-Jamal Warner trust dispute resolved in LA court petition

Here’s why the headline is misleading. Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s estate dispute has reportedly reached a settlement in Los Angeles County Superior Court, with his minor daughter receiving the primary rights to his trust and probate assets. The proposed agreement includes a $550,000 college fund and transfers his name, image and likeness rights to an entity belonging to his daughter.

Other family members would also receive specific payments. His mother, Pamela Warner, is set to receive $460,000, while his father and sister would each receive $12,500. The settlement follows a much broader dispute over Warner’s estate, including questions surrounding a family trust created in 1996, long before he married or became a father.

But the claim that his wife “gets nothing” needs important context. His widow, Tenisha Warner, previously filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1.2 million, arguing that Malcolm had failed to fulfill financial promises in their 2022 premarital agreement, including a $1 million life-insurance policy. She said he had intended to update his old estate plan before his death but never completed it.

So, based on the reported settlement, his daughter appears to be the main beneficiary of the trust and probate assets—but that does not necessarily mean his wife inherited nothing overall. Assets such as jointly owned property, beneficiary-designated accounts or separate insurance policies can be handled outside a trust. Until the complete estate plan and all related assets are publicly known, it is safer to say the settlement primarily protects his daughter rather than declaring that his widow received nothing.
