Michelle Obama explains why her and Barack’s decades-spanning marriage still works despite ‘ups and downs’

Michelle Obama recently opened up about why her decades-long marriage to Barack Obama has remained strong through what she describes as life’s “ups and downs.” Speaking in an interview with People, she explained that their relationship works because they “counterbalance” each other, helping each other grow in different ways while staying grounded.

Michelle reflected that before meeting Barack, she may have stayed within her comfort zone, but he encouraged her to take bigger risks in life and career. She described him as her “ballast,” saying he consistently supported her through uncertain and uncomfortable moments by reassuring her, “I got you,” and pushing her to “go leap” when she doubted herself.

Barack Obama, in turn, credited Michelle with grounding him and shaping him into a better person. He praised her integrity and strength, saying she helped provide stability for their family and gave their daughters a strong foundation. He also joked that their partnership hasn’t always been perfectly equal, but it has worked in their favor over the years.

Now in a new phase of life as empty nesters, the couple are focusing on personal growth while continuing to invest in their relationship. Michelle has said they have attended couples therapy over the years, emphasizing that marriage is “constant work” and requires ongoing communication, mutual respect, and the willingness to grow as individuals while staying connected.
