Michelle Obama is addressing the divorce rumors surrounding her and Barack Obama, saying the speculation says more about society’s expectations of women than it does about her marriage. During an appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, the former First Lady opened up about life after her daughters, Malia and Sasha, moved out—and how freeing it feels to finally make decisions based on what she wants.
Michelle explained that becoming an empty nester has given her a new sense of independence. “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she said, describing how difficult it can be for women to prioritize themselves without feeling guilty about disappointing others.
That newfound independence, however, apparently led some people to assume something much bigger was happening. Michelle said people “couldn’t even fathom” that she might simply be making a choice for herself, so they decided she and Barack must be getting divorced. Rumors intensified after she skipped Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration, while Barack attended both events.

Adding even more fuel to the speculation was a bizarre rumor involving Jennifer Aniston, who was reportedly linked romantically to Barack. Aniston later shut down the claim, saying she had only met Barack once and knew Michelle better. Despite all the speculation, Michelle’s comments suggest that her decision to step back from certain public appearances shouldn’t automatically be interpreted as trouble in her marriage. For now, she appears focused on enjoying a new chapter of life—one where she finally gets to make some choices for herself.
