My Daughter Moved to Korea Twelve Years Ago. Then One Day, at Sixty-Three, I Bought a Plane Ticket and Went Looking for Her.

The footsteps grew louder as Theresa stood frozen beside the boxes of cash. Her heart raced as the bedroom door slowly opened. She expected to see Kang Jun—but it was Mary Lou. For a moment, mother and daughter simply stared at each other. Then Mary Lou whispered, “Mom… why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” Theresa could barely speak before they fell into each other’s arms, both sobbing after twelve years apart.

When they finally pulled away, Theresa asked about the empty house and the money. Mary Lou lowered her eyes and finally told her the truth. She and Kang Jun had separated years ago, but their business and financial ties had kept pulling her back. She had built a successful company, but what once looked like success had slowly become a life she felt trapped inside. Every year, she sent Theresa $50,000 because she believed money was the only way she could still take care of her mother.

“I wanted to come home,” Mary Lou whispered. “Every Christmas, I told myself, next year.” But guilt, exhaustion, and endless responsibilities kept that promise out of reach. Theresa squeezed her daughter’s hands, tears streaming down her face. Suddenly, all those years made sense. Mary Lou hadn’t abandoned her. She had been drowning. And all Theresa had ever wanted was for her daughter to come home.

Theresa pulled her close and whispered, “I never needed the money, sweetheart. I needed my daughter.” Mary Lou broke down in her arms. That night, she finally let go of the life that had stolen so many years from them. Days later, she packed her belongings, took one last look at the house, and walked away with Theresa. As they headed home, Theresa held her daughter’s hand tightly. For twelve Christmases, she had set a place at the table for Mary Lou. This year, she finally came home. ❤️
