Panic Attacks and Anxiety Are Linked To Certain Vitamin And Mineral Deficiencies

Anxiety is a normal response to stress, but for some people it can become overwhelming, with symptoms such as racing heart, trembling, shortness of breath, and intense fear. Panic attacks can sometimes appear suddenly and leave people worried about when the next one might happen. While anxiety disorders have many possible causes, researchers have also been investigating whether nutrition could play a role.

One study from Okayama University looked at people who had visited an emergency department after severe panic attacks or hyperventilation episodes. Researchers found that these patients had lower levels of vitamin B6 and iron compared with healthy participants. Both nutrients are involved in important processes in the body, including pathways connected with neurotransmitters that influence mood. 🥬

However, there’s an important distinction: the study found an association, not proof that low B6 or iron causes panic attacks. Anxiety and panic disorders are complex and can involve genetics, brain chemistry, stress, medical conditions, and other factors. Taking supplements without knowing whether you are deficient may not help—and excessive amounts of some nutrients can be harmful.

If anxiety or panic attacks are affecting daily life, talking with a healthcare professional is the safest starting point. A balanced diet containing iron- and B6-rich foods, regular movement, relaxation techniques, and appropriate mental-health support can all be useful. ❤️ And if a deficiency is suspected, a professional can determine whether testing or supplementation is appropriate. Nutrition may be one piece of the puzzle, but it isn’t a standalone cure for anxiety.
