‘PATHETIC’: Abdul El-Sayed Slammed for Remark About Dolly Parton

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Michigan, sparked backlash after posting a tribute to Dolly Parton shortly after news of her death. El-Sayed praised Parton for using her music to highlight poverty, inequality and the struggles of working people, then referenced her autobiographical song “Coat of Many Colors.”

The tribute quickly became controversial on social media. Critics accused El-Sayed of turning a moment of mourning into a political message, with conservative commentators calling the post opportunistic and arguing that Parton herself had spent decades avoiding partisan politics. Some responses were especially harsh, including accusations that he was exploiting her death for political gain.

There is, however, a factual basis for El-Sayed’s reference to poverty: “Coat of Many Colors” was inspired by Parton’s childhood in rural Tennessee, when her family had very little money. Parton frequently spoke about growing up poor and later built a major philanthropic legacy around literacy, education and helping communities in need.

The controversy ultimately comes down to interpretation. Supporters can see El-Sayed’s message as a sincere recognition of the working-class themes in Parton’s music, while critics see it as unnecessary political framing during a period of mourning. Either way, the reaction shows just how difficult it can be to discuss a figure as broadly loved as Dolly Parton without politics entering the conversation.
