Photographer who captured haunting image of girl trapped in mudflow with black eyes explains tragic reason he didn’t try to save her

In 1985, French photographer Frank Fournier captured a heartbreaking image of 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez, who became trapped in volcanic debris following the devastating eruption of Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia. The disaster triggered deadly mudflows known as lahars, which swept through the town of Armero and claimed approximately 23,000 lives. Omayra remained trapped for around 60 hours, and her extraordinary courage in the face of death touched people around the world.

Rescuers struggled desperately to free her because her legs were pinned beneath debris, and attempts to pull her out risked worsening her condition. As water continued to rise around her, rescuers used a tire to help keep her afloat. Despite receiving food and drinks, the teenager’s condition deteriorated. Witnesses recalled her speaking about school and sharing loving words for her family before she died on November 16, 1985. Her exact cause of death was never conclusively established. 💔

Fournier’s photograph spread internationally, prompting intense debate about why he documented Omayra’s final hours instead of attempting to rescue her. In a 2005 interview with the BBC, he explained that rescuing her was impossible under the circumstances. He described feeling powerless as he watched the young girl face death with courage and dignity, believing his responsibility was to report her suffering honestly so the world would understand the scale of the tragedy.

The photographer also believed the image helped raise international aid and draw attention to serious failures in disaster preparedness. Scientists had warned of the volcanic danger, yet evacuation measures were inadequate. Decades later, the photograph remains deeply disturbing, but Fournier sees it as more than an image of suffering. He believes it preserves Omayra’s courage and connects people to a tragedy that should never be forgotten. 🕊️
