Phoebe Cates became widely known for her role as Kate Beringer in Gremlins and her earlier appearance in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which helped establish her as one of the most recognizable young actors of the 1980s. Her performances in teen comedies and lighthearted films captured the tone of that era in Hollywood.

She was born in New York City in 1963 and originally trained as a dancer. After a knee injury ended those plans, she transitioned into modeling and then acting. Over roughly a decade, she built a modest but memorable film career, appearing in movies such as Drop Dead Fred and Princess Caraboo.

By the mid-1990s, she began stepping away from acting. Her last major film role came in The Anniversary Party (2001). This decision was largely personal, as she chose to focus on her family life with actor Kevin Kline, whom she married in 1989. Together, they raised two children, and she prioritized that role over continuing in Hollywood.

Later, she turned her attention to business, opening a boutique called Blue Tree in New York City. The shop reflects her interest in art, design, and distinctive items. Although she rarely appears on screen today, she remains closely associated with her iconic roles from the 1980s.
