Remember these old American car names?

Many classic American car brands that once filled highways have completely disappeared from the modern automotive landscape. Some were victims of changing consumer tastes, corporate restructuring and increasing competition, while others simply could not survive the shifting auto industry. Yet their names and legendary models remain familiar to car enthusiasts.

Oldsmobile, founded in 1897, was one of America’s oldest automakers before General Motors discontinued the brand in 2004. Pontiac, famous for the GTO, Firebird and Trans Am, followed in 2010. Plymouth, which produced affordable family cars as well as muscle-car icons like the Barracuda and Road Runner, disappeared in 2001. Ford’s Mercury brand lasted from 1938 until 2011, positioned between Ford and Lincoln.

Other brands had equally memorable stories. Saturn, launched by General Motors in 1985, became known for no-haggle pricing and distinctive plastic body panels before being discontinued in 2010. Meanwhile, independent names such as Studebaker, Hudson and Packard represent an even earlier era of American motoring. Studebaker evolved from a wagon manufacturer into a major automaker, while Hudson gained fame through the powerful Hudson Hornet and Packard became synonymous with American luxury.

American Motors Corporation (AMC) also carved out a unique place in automotive history. Known for unconventional models such as the Gremlin, Pacer and Eagle, AMC remained an alternative to Detroit’s biggest manufacturers until Chrysler acquired the company in 1987. Although these brands are gone, their cars remain treasured by collectors and enthusiasts—and their names still evoke a very different era of American automotive history.
