On August 27, 2025, a student Mass at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis turned into a devastating tragedy. Two children, just 8 and 10 years old, lost their lives, and 17 others—including 14 children—were injured. Two of the wounded remain in critical condition, leaving the community heartbroken and searching for answers.

Authorities later identified the assailant as Robin Westman, a woman in her early twenties who had legally changed her name from Robert in 2020. Investigators uncovered troubling online activity linked to Westman, including firearm videos, extremist imagery, and anti-religious symbols. A handwritten manifesto detailed years of mental health struggles, isolation, and remorse. Officials believe Westman died during the incident.

Witnesses described scenes of panic and courage inside the sanctuary. Fifth-grader Weston Halse recalled hiding under a pew as a friend shielded him, suffering injuries in the process. Parents of survivors expressed both relief and anguish, while also voicing frustration about the growing number of violent incidents in schools. Carla Maldonado, mother of two children who escaped unharmed, emphasized the need for schools to be better prepared for emergencies.

In response, President Donald Trump offered condolences online, calling for prayers for the victims and their families. He ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff through August 31 at all federal buildings, military posts, and embassies worldwide. The FBI continues to investigate the case, working to uncover answers and support the grieving community.
