Romir Parker, 12, Named Honorary Firefighter After Brave Rescue

Virginia Boy Saves Family from House Fire, Honored as Local Hero

In Petersburg, Virginia, a seventh grader is being celebrated after putting his own safety at risk to rescue his family from a sudden house fire. Thanks to 12-year-old Romir Parker’s quick thinking, four lives were saved that day.

The incident happened in early June during what began as a normal afternoon. Romir was in his upstairs bedroom when he heard a strange noise coming from downstairs. As he went to investigate, he was confronted by thick, heavy smoke filling the home.

Inside was his grandmother, unable to get out on her own. Without hesitation, Romir went back through the smoke, located her, and helped her outside to safety—just moments before the Petersburg Fire Department arrived. Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control within minutes, but authorities noted that without Romir’s actions, the story could have ended much differently.

Petersburg Fire Chief Wayne Hoover praised the seventh grader’s bravery, saying, “Even if our crew got there within four minutes, Romir saved his family’s lives.” The city honored him with a proclamation recognizing his courage and composure, and the fire department named him an honorary firefighter.

Chief Hoover also extended an invitation for Romir’s future, telling him that once he turns 18, a place will be waiting for him with the fire brigade if he chooses to join.
