Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is mourning the death of her boyfriend, former NHL star Ron Duguay, who has died at 69 following a battle with stage 4 colon cancer. The disease had spread to his appendix and gallbladder. Sharing the heartbreaking news on Instagram, Palin wrote: “It’s with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now. He fought so hard. Love never ends.” Duguay’s daughter, Shay Thomas, also paid tribute, writing: “Our hearts are broken. We love you forever, Dad.”

Palin and Duguay were first romantically linked in 2022, after connecting through their shared interest in hockey. Their relationship grew closer while Palin was dealing with a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. She later spoke warmly about Duguay, describing him as a source of support and praising his down-to-earth perspective. In the days before his death, Palin shared a photograph of herself holding his hand in a hospital bed and asked followers to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.
Duguay was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, and his family revealed in 2026 that the illness had progressed to stage 4. His daughter previously described how painful it was to watch her father endure the fight, explaining that nothing could prepare a family for what cancer looks like up close. His final months were marked by an increasingly difficult battle with the disease, according to the family.
Drafted by the New York Rangers in 1977, Duguay played 12 NHL seasons, representing the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins. Known for his flowing hair, skating style, and charisma, he helped the Rangers reach the 1979 Stanley Cup Final. After retiring, he worked as a hockey analyst for MSG Network from 2007 to 2018. He leaves behind his three children, Shay, Amber, and Noah. 🕊️
