She grew up on a ranch, where she started working at just 5 years old – today, she is one of our most beloved singers

Long before she became one of country music’s most beloved voices, Reba McEntire grew up working hard on her family’s ranch in Oklahoma. At just five years old, her father would place her on a feed sack so she could help steer his truck through the cattle fields. Rodeo was part of the family too—her grandfather and father were both accomplished steer ropers.

Life wasn’t glamorous, but music was always present. Reba’s mother encouraged her children to sing together, eventually forming a family trio with Reba, Pake, and Susie. Reba was also active in sports and rodeo, but her powerful voice kept getting noticed. In 1974, she sang the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo, where country artist Red Steagall heard her and recognized something special.

The road to stardom wasn’t easy. Reba moved to Nashville with her mother in 1975 to record a demo, and after an uncertain beginning, she finally broke through. Her career exploded after signing with MCA Records in the 1980s, leading to No. 1 hits, Grammy Awards, acting success, and decades at the top of country music. But in 1991, tragedy struck when a plane crash killed eight members of her band and two pilots—a loss that deeply affected her.

Reba faced another devastating loss when her mother died of cancer in 2020. She later admitted she briefly considered giving up music because she had always felt she was singing for her mother. Thankfully, she continued. Today, Reba remains a country icon, while also giving back through projects like Reba’s Place in Atoka, Oklahoma. From a hardworking ranch girl to a legendary performer, her story is one of talent, resilience, family, and heart. ❤️✨
