The Sin of Cremation: What Does the Bible Say?

Cremation has become increasingly common across many cultures today. For Christians, it often raises an important question about whether choosing cremation reflects a spiritual shortcoming and what Scripture teaches on the matter.

From a biblical perspective, the key idea is God’s sovereignty over human life and death. The Bible does not explicitly forbid cremation, though it includes references to how bodies were treated after death.

Historically, burial was the standard practice among the Israelites. Examples include Abraham purchasing a burial place for Sarah and Joseph’s body being carried from Egypt to be laid to rest in Canaan, reflecting long-standing cultural traditions.

Even so, Christian belief holds that God’s power is not limited by the condition of the body. Whether buried or cremated, faith affirms the promise of resurrection. What matters most is honoring the deceased with respect while trusting in God’s eternal purpose and grace.
