Math puzzles often go viral because they appear simple but can quickly cause confusion. One example is 25 ÷ 5(2+3), a problem that has sparked plenty of debate online. The image even includes a note saying, “Answer is NOT 1,” leaving many people wondering what the correct result should be.
To solve it, we follow the standard order of operations, commonly known as PEMDAS or BODMAS. Parentheses come first, so we begin with (2 + 3) = 5. The original expression then becomes 25 ÷ 5 × 5. At this stage, multiplication and division have equal priority, so neither automatically comes before the other.
Instead, multiplication and division must be handled from left to right. Starting with 25 ÷ 5 gives us 5. We then multiply that result by the remaining 5: 5 × 5 = 25. Therefore, when the expression is interpreted according to the standard left-to-right convention, the answer is 25.
So why do some people get 1? They treat 5(2+3) as one grouped multiplication step, calculating 5 × 5 = 25 before dividing 25 by 25. That produces 1, but it applies a different interpretation of the notation. With the conventional order-of-operations approach used above, 25 is the result. 🧠
