The Weird Reason Everyone Is Lifting Their Windshield Wipers

Leaving windshield wipers raised has become a familiar sight during snowy winters and hot summer days. Many drivers believe lifting the blades protects the rubber from extreme temperatures and prevents damage, but the habit has both advantages and drawbacks.

During winter, the main benefit is preventing the wipers from freezing to the windshield. Ice can stick the rubber firmly to the glass, making it difficult to remove snow and increasing the risk of tearing the blade if it is pulled away forcefully. Raising the wipers can make clearing the windshield easier and safer.

Some drivers also lift their wipers during very hot weather, hoping to keep the rubber from sticking to heated glass. However, raised blades are still exposed to sunlight, heat and air, so this does not completely prevent natural aging or deterioration of the rubber.

There are also potential risks. A raised wiper arm can accidentally fall against the windshield and potentially crack the glass or damage the blade. Some vehicles also require the wipers to be placed in a special service position before they can safely be lifted. Ultimately, raising them can be helpful in certain conditions, especially freezing weather, but careful handling, regular inspection and replacing worn blades are still the best ways to maintain clear visibility and safe driving. 🚗
