Trump Just Scored a Huge Legal Win

A New York appellate court on Thursday struck down the half-billion-dollar penalty imposed in the civil fraud case against former President Donald Trump, his sons, and several Trump Organization executives. The panel ruled that the $527 million disgorgement was “excessive” under the Eighth Amendment, though the judges remained divided on aspects of the case itself.

In February 2024, a New York trial judge had ordered Trump and his co-defendants to pay $364 million in alleged “ill-gotten gains,” plus years of accrued interest, pushing the total to over half a billion dollars. The appeals ruling now voids that penalty, marking a major win for Trump as legal battles continue.
