Trump’s Approval Rating Falls to Around 36% as Disapproval Remains High

President Donald Trump’s approval rating is hovering around 36% to 39% in several major national polls as October 2026 comes to a close, while disapproval stands around 59% to 61% in many surveys. Some polls have recorded even lower figures, including 32% in Reuters/Ipsos and CNN/SSRS polling. The results point to growing public dissatisfaction ahead of the November midterm elections.

The economy and cost of living appear to be major sources of frustration. A Fox News poll found that six in ten voters consider the cost of living their biggest economic concern. An AP-NORC survey found just 17% approve of Trump’s handling of living costs, while a CNBC poll reported 65% disapproval of his economic performance. Gallup’s October research also found that half of registered voters consider the economy and healthcare extremely important to their midterm vote, with 47% saying the same about the situation in Iran.

However, opinions differ dramatically depending on political affiliation. A Marquette Law School poll found that 75% of Republicans approve of Trump, compared with just 14% of independents and 2% of Democrats. Even among Republicans, approval has slipped from 78% in September. Among Republicans who remain favorable toward the MAGA movement, approval stands at 92%, showing that his core supporters remain strongly behind him.

The political consequences could be significant. A recent survey found that 44% of voters say their congressional vote is mainly a vote against Trump, while 21% say it is a vote in his favor and 35% say he has little impact on their decision. Other polls show Democrats leading in several congressional preference surveys. Still, these figures reflect public opinion at this moment—not guaranteed election results—and the final outcome will depend on turnout and individual races.
