Unlocking the Mystery Object: The Classic Rubber Squeeze Coin Purse

At first glance, the bright red oval object in the picture can look like a modern gadget or a small protective case. But this unusual item is actually a vintage rubber squeeze coin purse, sometimes known as a Quikey or oval squeeze purse. Its simple design allowed people to carry coins without using zippers, buttons, snaps or other fasteners.

The purse works through the natural flexibility of its rubber or soft vinyl casing. A narrow slit runs along the center and normally stays closed because of the material’s tension. When you squeeze both ends inward, the sides flex outward and the central opening pops wide enough to access the contents. Release the pressure, and the purse quickly returns to its original shape, sealing itself shut.

These coin purses became especially popular from the 1950s through the 1980s, when coins were essential for payphones, parking meters, public transportation and laundromats. They were also popular promotional giveaways. Banks, gas stations, hardware stores, insurance companies and other businesses often printed their names and contact information on the purses and handed them out to customers.

Although cash is used less often today, the design can still be useful for carrying coins, tokens, small cables, guitar picks or other tiny items. Its compact shape and one-handed opening made it practical long before modern digital payments and tech accessories existed. What looks like a mysterious little object is actually a clever example of simple vintage design—proof that useful everyday products don’t always need complicated mechanisms. ❤️
