What are Square Waves?

That strange grid-like pattern on the water is known as a cross sea. It happens when two different wave systems travel across each other, often at nearly right angles. This can occur when winds suddenly change direction and create new waves that intersect older swells—or when distant weather systems send waves toward the same area. 🌊👀

Although the pattern looks beautiful and almost perfectly organized, cross seas can create dangerous conditions. Waves arriving from different directions can make the water unpredictable, creating strong currents and making it much harder for swimmers to maintain their balance or direction. What looks calm and fascinating from above can be extremely challenging in the water. 😨

Boats can also face serious difficulties in these conditions because waves may strike from different directions at the same time, making the vessel’s movement far less predictable. That’s why this unusual phenomenon should be admired from a safe distance, rather than treated as an invitation to jump into the water. 🚤⚠️

So if you ever see the ocean—or even a large lake—suddenly forming a strange checkerboard or crisscross pattern, resist the temptation to get closer for a better look. ❤️🌊 Stay on shore or observe from a safe, elevated location. Nature can create some of the most incredible sights on Earth, but sometimes the most beautiful ones deserve to be admired from a distance. 🙏✨
