A large, painful bump on your back that looks like it could “pop” may be more than an ordinary pimple. It can be an inflamed acne lesion, such as a nodule, cyst, or pustule, which develops when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria become trapped in a pore. Because the back contains many oil-producing glands, these breakouts can sometimes become especially swollen and uncomfortable. 😳
Several factors can make back acne worse. Sweat, friction, and tight clothing can irritate hair follicles, while backpacks and workout clothes may trap moisture against the skin. Deeper acne lesions form beneath the surface, which is why they can feel firm, tender, and much larger than typical pimples.
Whatever you do, don’t squeeze or pop a deep bump. Trying to force it open can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of infection, dark marks, and permanent scarring. Instead, gently cleanse the area and consider a body wash containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which can help with acne when used appropriately. 🧼
Keeping the skin clean and dry can also help, especially after exercise. Choose loose-fitting clothing and shower after heavy sweating. If a bump becomes very painful, unusually large, keeps returning, or doesn’t improve, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist. A professional can determine whether it’s acne or another type of skin lesion and recommend appropriate treatment. ❤️
