What Is That White String in an Egg

Have you ever cracked open an egg and noticed a strange white, stringy strand attached to the yolk? It might look unusual, but there’s nothing wrong with your egg. That little strand is called the chalaza, a natural protein structure found inside eggs. Most eggs have two chalazae, positioned on opposite sides of the yolk.

So what does it do? Think of the chalaza as the egg’s built-in stabilizer. It helps keep the yolk centered inside the egg and protects it from moving around too much. The yolk is suspended within the egg white, while the chalaza helps hold it in place as the egg is moved or handled.

Interestingly, a clearly visible, thick chalaza can be a sign of a relatively fresh egg. As an egg ages, the chalaza gradually becomes thinner and less noticeable. However, the chalaza alone isn’t a definitive freshness test—the egg’s storage conditions and overall quality matter too.

And yes, you can safely eat it. The chalaza is made largely of the same proteins found in egg white and is harmless. It usually disappears into the egg during cooking. There’s no need to remove it unless you’re making something extremely smooth, such as a delicate custard. So next time you see that little white string, don’t worry—it’s not a defect. It’s simply part of the egg’s natural design. 🥚
