WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL COLOR OF HYDRANGEAS?

If you immediately thought blue, you’re definitely not alone! Blue hydrangeas are everywhere—from gardens and wedding bouquets to postcards and social media. But here’s the surprising part: blue wasn’t the original color. 👀 These fascinating flowers can even change color depending on the soil. More acidic soil can produce blue blooms, while alkaline soil tends to produce pink ones, with purple shades appearing in between.

So what did the earliest hydrangeas look like before gardeners began cultivating different varieties? 🌿 Wild hydrangeas were mostly white, long before the blue, pink and purple flowers we commonly see today became popular. Over generations of cultivation and changes in growing conditions, hydrangeas developed into the incredible variety of colors we enjoy now.

And here’s another fun fact: the name “hydrangea” comes from Greek words meaning “water vessel,” inspired by the plant’s seed capsules. 💧🌱 It’s also fitting because hydrangeas love moisture and generally grow best when they receive plenty of water. So that beautiful flower in your garden may actually be giving you clues about the soil beneath it!

🌸 THE CORRECT ANSWER IS: WHITE! 🤍 Did you get it right, or did you fall for the famous blue hydrangea? 😄 Tell us your answer before you look it up—and challenge a friend to see if they know! 👇
