What’s a Bottle Tree—and How Do I Make One?

Bottle trees are a unique garden decoration with a long history that stretches back centuries. Traditionally associated with the American South, they are believed to have originated in Africa and were brought to the United States through cultural traditions passed down over generations. According to folklore, colorful glass bottles placed on tree branches were thought to trap evil spirits, with blue bottles being especially popular because they symbolized protection and healing.

Today, bottle trees are valued more for their beauty and creativity than for superstition. Made from recycled glass bottles arranged on tree branches or metal frames, they add bright colors and visual interest to gardens and outdoor spaces. Some of the most impressive displays can be found across the United States, including large collections that have transformed the simple idea into a form of outdoor art.

Creating a bottle tree is surprisingly simple. The easiest method is to place empty bottles onto the branches of a suitable tree. If that isn’t possible, many people use metal frames designed specifically for bottle trees. DIY enthusiasts can build their own by securing a wooden post into the ground, attaching metal rods as branches, and sliding bottles onto each rod. Another budget-friendly option is to turn an old tomato cage upside down and bend the wires outward to create bottle-holding branches.

To make your own bottle tree, you’ll need a sturdy frame or tree, colorful glass bottles, and basic tools if building from scratch. Many people prefer blue, green, or amber bottles, but any color works. Before using recycled bottles, remove labels by soaking them in a mixture of vinegar and water. Once assembled, your bottle tree becomes a colorful garden feature that combines history, creativity, and recycling in one simple project.
