Which Side of the Fence Must Face the Neighbor?

If you’ve ever seen a new fence going up, you may have noticed that one side looks smooth and finished, while the other shows the posts, rails, nails, and supports. So which side should face the neighbor? The traditional rule is simple: the finished “good side” faces outward toward the neighbor or street, while the structural side faces the owner’s yard. 🏡

Why? It’s partly about appearance and courtesy. A finished exterior creates a cleaner look for the street and neighboring property. Keeping the posts and rails inside also makes maintenance easier for the fence owner—and can make the fence slightly harder to climb from the outside. But there’s an important catch: this is not a universal law. Local regulations, zoning rules, HOA requirements, or property agreements may require something different. ⚠️

If both neighbors want the attractive side, there are alternatives. Shadowbox, board-on-board, and two-sided fencing can give both properties a finished appearance. And if the fence sits directly on a property boundary, it’s smart to agree beforehand on the location, style, cost, maintenance, and orientation. A friendly conversation can prevent a major argument later. 🤝❤️

👉 THE SIMPLE RULE: Finished side out. Posts and rails in. But don’t assume the fence’s orientation proves who legally owns it or where the property line is. For that, property records, surveys, and local laws matter. Before installing a fence, check your local requirements—because the “good side out” rule is a common convention, not a universal law. 👀
