Why People Are Putting Toilet Paper in the Fridge

Putting a roll of toilet paper in the refrigerator might sound strange, but many people use this simple trick to help keep their fridge fresher and reduce unwanted odors. The idea works because toilet paper is highly absorbent. Inside a refrigerator, it can absorb excess moisture from the air, which may help reduce humidity and limit the buildup of unpleasant smells from foods like onions, garlic, leftovers, or cheese. Some people also believe it helps food stay fresher a little longer by creating a drier environment.

This hack is popular because it is cheap and convenient. Instead of buying commercial fridge deodorizers, many people simply use a fresh roll they already have at home. The trick works best in refrigerators with light odor or moisture problems. However, it will not solve serious issues caused by spoiled food, mold, or leaks. In those cases, a full cleaning is still necessary. For stronger odors, products like baking soda or activated charcoal are usually more effective.

To use it properly, place the roll somewhere dry inside the fridge, such as a side shelf or top shelf. Keep it away from spills and condensation so it does not become soggy too quickly. Most people replace the roll every three to four weeks, or sooner if it starts feeling damp or develops a stale smell. Always use a clean, unused roll and do not let it touch uncovered food.

Replace it immediately if it becomes wet or moldy, and continue cleaning your fridge regularly. The toilet paper fridge hack is not a miracle solution, but it can help absorb small amounts of moisture and reduce mild odors in an inexpensive, simple way. Sometimes the oddest household tricks turn out to be surprisingly useful.
