With a very heavy heart, we announce the passing of this acclaimed classical actor at 98

Acclaimed actor Alan Mandell has died at the age of 98, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in theater and film. His family confirmed that he passed away Tuesday at his home in Westwood, Los Angeles. Best known for his interpretations of playwright Samuel Beckett’s works, Mandell spent decades captivating audiences with his poetic delivery and extraordinary stage presence.

Born on December 27, 1927, in Toronto, Canada, Mandell reached a defining moment in 1957 when he performed in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at San Quentin State Prison before approximately 1,400 inmates. The production helped inspire the San Quentin Drama Workshop, which he later co-founded with former inmate Rick Cluchey. Mandell also worked directly with Beckett on productions of Waiting for Godot and Endgame, further cementing his reputation as a distinguished interpreter of the playwright’s work.

Although theater remained his greatest passion, Mandell also appeared in numerous films and television shows. Audiences may remember him as Rabbi Marshak in the Coen brothers’ 2009 film A Serious Man, alongside appearances in Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His television credits included The Six Million Dollar Man, Cannon and Grey’s Anatomy. In 2012, he received an Ovation Award in recognition of his contributions to theater.

Even in his later years, Mandell continued sharing his knowledge with younger performers. In 2025, actors Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter sought his advice while preparing for their Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot. Beyond his performances, Mandell helped shape the Los Angeles theater community as an actor, director and arts supporter. He was married to Elizabeth Heller, who died in 1997, and leaves behind two children and three grandchildren. His influence on generations of performers and audiences will not be forgotten.
