Jill Smokler, the beloved founder of Scary Mommy and New York Times bestselling author, has died at the age of 48 after a more than two-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She passed away on June 22, 2026, at her home in Baltimore. Her family announced the news in a statement shared on Instagram, remembering her as “funny, fierce, and completely herself.”
Smokler first rose to prominence in 2008 when she launched Scary Mommy while raising three young children. What started as a personal blog quickly became a cultural phenomenon, offering brutally honest and relatable reflections on motherhood. At a time when parenting was often portrayed as perfect, her writing stood out for its raw honesty about exhaustion, chaos, guilt, and love, resonating with millions of readers worldwide.
As her influence grew, she expanded her work beyond blogging. She authored two New York Times bestselling books and later founded Scary Mommy Nation, a nonprofit that helped provide Thanksgiving meals to families in need. Although she sold Scary Mommy in 2015, she continued creating content through her podcast She’s Got Issues, focusing on real, unfiltered conversations about women’s lives.
After her diagnosis in 2024, Smokler continued sharing her journey openly, documenting treatment and challenges with honesty and humor. She is survived by her three children and family. Scary Mommy paid tribute to her legacy, noting that her voice gave millions of parents permission to speak openly and feel less alone.
