Fans are mourning the loss of Ben Jones, best known for playing the lovable mechanic Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard. Jones died at 84 after suffering a heart attack, according to his wife, Alma Viator. She shared the heartbreaking news, saying he was at home in his favorite chair, waiting to watch the Atlanta Braves, and described him as a man who lived a “full” and happy life.

Born in North Carolina in 1941 and raised in Virginia, Jones developed an interest in entertainment while attending the University of North Carolina. He studied radio, television and motion pictures before pursuing acting. His early credits included Together for Days, The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings, Smokey and the Bandit, and The Lincoln Conspiracy.

But it was Cooter Davenport who made Jones a household name. He appeared in 141 episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard between 1979 and 1985, becoming one of the show’s most recognizable and beloved characters. His friendly mechanic character remained closely associated with him long after the series ended, creating a lasting connection with generations of fans.

Jones later took an unexpected turn into politics. A Democrat, he first ran for Congress in 1986 before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1989, where he served two terms. From television screens to Washington, his life was far more varied than many fans realized. He leaves behind a legacy spanning entertainment, public service and one unforgettable character.
