With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this incredible man.

Yehuda Aharon Widawski, one of Israel’s oldest Holocaust survivors, has died at 107, leaving behind a remarkable story of survival, loss, and remembrance. Born in Poland in 1919, Widawski was forced into the Łódź Ghetto after the Nazi invasion. In 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz, where his parents and several siblings were murdered. Only Yehuda and his brother Yehoshua survived the selection. 🕯️

The brothers were later sent to a Nazi forced-labor camp near Breslau, where prisoners were forced to manufacture aircraft parts. Widawski later recalled that most prisoners lied about their professions in hopes of improving their chances of survival—but he told the truth. His honesty reportedly earned him better treatment, and he eventually became an informal leader among the prisoners, devising ways to help protect them from punishment.

After liberation in 1945, Widawski rebuilt his life, married, raised a family, and immigrated to Israel in 1950. But decades later, he returned to Poland searching for his grandmother’s grave. What began as a personal search became a lifelong mission. He helped identify and restore more than 3,000 Jewish graves in Łódź and worked to preserve Jewish cemeteries and the memory of communities destroyed during the Holocaust. ❤️

Widawski was later honored for his work, including being chosen to light a torch at Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony in 2012. He once described his “revenge” against the Nazis simply: “They lost, and we have the State of Israel.” In 2018, he returned to Poland with 31 family members, and he lived to see generations of descendants. His death marks the passing of another firsthand witness—but the memories he preserved, the graves he restored, and the family he built ensure his story will continue. 🕯️
